All of these and others have led many students astray and set their academic sojourn on the wrong path.

The truth is there are many activities on campus that runs from first day of resumption till the first day of holidays, there are also activities for those that remain in school during the holidays. There are many social activities too numerous to mention e.g. football, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, lawn tennis (both inter and intra-university competitions) etc.

There are also club activities like State association, Tribe association and local government association where most local scholarships and bursary opportunities are discussed, there are also the departmental and faculty associations both political and the unpolitical. All of these and more are allowed on the campus and permitted by the school management but are major destroyer of most freshmen on the campus.

Read this story of a bright student that. A boy gained admission to study Civil engineering, he resumed school like all other students, then by the second week of lecture, he heard about fresher’s party organized by National Association of Science Students (NASS), Department of Civil Engineering and his State of origin club, he started preparing for this, then he heard of the interdepartmental football competition then he joined, he also joined Man ‘O War and some other clubs of interest to him and participated in most of their activities.

These club activities kept happening till it was one week for commencement of first semester examination which he sat for and failed woefully. Fortunately for him, he saw his first semester examination results early in second semester and he was lucky to sought for good counsel that put him back on the right track.

AVOID THESE DANGEROUS MISTAKES UNIVERSITY STUDENTS MAKE IN THEIR FIRST YEAR

As we have identified earlier, mistakes are welcomed for the inexperienced but can be prevented, we have identified some mistakes university students make in their first year and how it can be prevented. Read below:

  1. ABUSE OF FREEDOM

Many students tend to abuse the freedom that comes with going to the university most especially those from a very strict home. They tend to attempt to do all the things their parents prevented them from doing. Some that have never attended a party unaccompanied becomes a chronic night party freak. For students who do this, they are on mission of self-destruction.

  1. LACK OF FOCUS

Many students lack focus or lose focus to inanities in school. They tend to get carried away by the things going around them. Keeping your head straight and not losing focus is an important part of any business in life. Your ability to keep focus keeps you longer in the scheme of things and makes you outstanding among others.

  1. FAILING TO SET A TARGET

To be successful in life, you must have what drives you, your self-conviction about your wants contributes to your planning. And as the saying goes, he who fails to plan, plans to fail. As an undergraduate, you must be able to set target for yourself and map out plans on how to achieve the target. Don’t make vague plans, make both short and long term plans that you can achieve and identify how you will achieve it.

  1. LEARN HOW TO CALCULATE YOUR CUMULATIVE GRADE POINT AVERAGE (CGPA) FROM THE WORD GO.

A student in school who doesn’t know how calculate the cumulative grade point average (CGPA) is like a bank account holder who doesn’t know how to check his account balance, you would be living in the dark.

Most universities teach students how to calculate GPA during matriculation, some departments teach it during the first week of lectures. But in case none of that happens, meet any of your responsible seniors in school to teach you how to calculate the CGPA.

Use this to calculate your CGPA.

Knowing how to will help you determine your stance, what needs to be done and how safe you are.

  1. AVOID EMOTIONAL DISTURBANCE AS MUCH AS YOU CAN

Truth be told, very many students are single at home but married in school, some don’t even live in their apartment anymore, very many cohabit with their boyfriend or girlfriend. While we will not tell you not to date while in school because it’s part of life but dedicating more than 30 % of your energy to relationship does not worth it.

Most of the best graduating students in most universities attributes their academic success to not getting into any relationship in school, some even said not getting into any relationship is part of their first class strategy. As a student, ensure your relationship doesn’t get you into any situation-ship.

  1. LET NIGHT CLASS BE NIGHT CLASS

The night class is an opportunity for students to learn and teach each other overnight. Many students misuse this opportunity, some use the opportunity to meet new people, play music, watch videos, browse the internet on un-academic things and others. While all these things we mentioned are not bad but you will agree that doing it every day is a no-brainer.

When you go for night class, plan your time properly, if you get to school for night class like around 10PM., you can sleep till 12, read from 12 to 2, play with friends for 30 minutes, read from 2:30 till 4:30 then sleep again from 4:30 till 5:30. Doing this, you would have slept for 3 hours, read from 4 hours and play with friends for 30 minutes. This will give you a balance and you will be able to achieve what you intend to achieve with night class. This also adds to one of the numerous mistakes university students make in their first year.

  1. ATTENDANCE/ MISSING CLASS

Most university first class graduates are well known to their lecturers, missing class will never do a student a good. Most departments and lecturers take attendance very serious, some even stipulates that students with less than 70% attendance will not be permitted to sit for examinations.

Most lecturers unknowingly stress area of concentration (A.O.C) during lectures and for students who absconds from class, they will be denying themselves the opportunity.

Also, on the same vein, ensure you take notes while in class, don’t join the back-benchers, take notes properly and highlight any point the lecturer reiterates in class, it will help you during preparation for exam.

  1. TAKE TESTS SERIOUS.

Most universities, departments and lecturers have different ways of organizing their C. A’s, some lecturers can organize about ten tests before the end of a semester and they alone know which of the tests they tend to use. Some lecturers even discard the tests to the waste bin immediately after the tests.

You as a student cannot because of these decide not to take test or prepare for test, you will only be doing yourself harm by doing so.

Take tests serious and prepare adequately for them.

  1. GROUP PROJECTS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Many questions given during assignments and group projects are often repeated in examination but many students don’t pay attention during the course of the semester. Many students do “copy and paste” and this tends to bite them hard when same questions are repeated as exam question.

When preparing for examination, students are advised to start preparation for their examination with past questions, assignments and group projects.

  1. FREQUENT SCHOOL MOSQUE OR CHURCH WITH LECTURER(S) AS ATTENDANTS

Apart from helping your soul spiritually, lecturers serve as staff advisers and advise students on what to do to guide them. You could use their guidance and help when you when you need so that you don’t make mistakes university students make in their first year.

  1. INADEQUATE PREPARATION FOR EXAMINATION

Because of the life students live in school and the kinds of friends many keep, very many do not prepare for examination at all or prepare very late for examinations.

Many tertiary institutions give students the grace of two weeks lecture free for them to prepare for examination but instead most students rather spend it clubbing and doing other unnecessary things and adds to the mistakes university students make in their first year.

CONCLUSION

All of these and others unmentioned are major causes for failure of most first year students and some returning students in school and it is our utmost believe that if students can keep these points in mind and make use of them, it will safe guide them from mistakes students make in their first year in school.
